You found a penny! A bright, shiny penny on the ground. Do you pick it up? Well, depends. Some people hate pennies, some love them. They’re that little piece of coin that isn’t worth a lot or maybe it could be. So let’s say… you save a penny every single day for a year. That’s $3.65! Hey, you could almost buy a Starbucks drink or a gallon of milk (depending where you live). Now think of that penny as though it were $1.00 that you found. Now you have $365 for the year if you save a dollar a day. You see where I am going with this yet?
Now I want you to figure out your worth.
My ah-ha moment came just this past Tuesday. We had our annual reviews and unfortunately, it did not go so well. This is my 7pm to 730am Fri-Mon job. Three overnight shifts where there is no bureaucracy just people wanting to get things done and save people. Now, I worked hard to get to where I am at. When I went to school, I was told that my field was in hot demand. That my field was doing things! Yeah, we totally are, but the thing is, I am still not good enough. Even with my current degree, they are asking more of me even though the pay will never reflect it. I make more on my weekend overnight shift than I would as a supervisor! How insane is that?
Let’s go back to the penny.
So you have a shiny penny that you brought home. You want to make sure that it finds friends, so you save and save and save some more. You want to get there. You know that when you save that you can totally see improvement. The same goes with your life. If you’re not working towards the next goal then you are not saving! You need to be working towards the next goal that you have, no matter what it is. You need to be working towards the better money. Why? Because you are worth it! Corporations do not want someone who makes $50,000 a year. They want someone who will be happy with $20,000. Why pay someone $50,000 a year and they’ll be happy with less. You need to know your worth. Know your value.
The minute that you find out on your value. Your life improves! You know what you are worth, now you just need to figure out how to get there! The biggest thing that I want you to get out of this is to know where you are coming from and where you want to go. If it is in the same career field then what can you do to get there? If it’s not, what do you want to do and what’s your first step. The hardest part about any sort of career change or advancement is that first step.
Have you found your penny?
Happy Friday! Time for me to sleep!
